Abstract:
The fractographic analysis has a wide use in material research and industrial applications. However, the conservative fractographic methods - searching and deterministic description of fractographic features using photographic techniques, manual measurement, etc. - have reached their limits. Therefore the new development requires to introduce the up-to-date methods of computer image processing. In the recent research in the Dept. of Materials, FNSPE CTU Prague, two areas of application on the fatigue fracture surface analysis have been found to be promising: I. Recognition and measurement of striations. Involvement of automatic methods will substantially increase the effectivness and objectivity of the analysis. II. Evaluation of fracture surface image as a random field. This is a qualitatively new approach - also integral statistical characteristics of larger areas can serve as fractographic features.
